Sunday Times travel expert, Richard Green, responds: The place you are thinking of is actually in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and is called the Inn at Christmas Place (001 865 868 0525). It opened in June this year, has 145 rooms, with doubles from £64.

If you happened to by driving by in mid summer, perhaps on the way to Dollywood, pull in for the curiosity value, but as the States does Christmas decorations at Christmas time so whole-heartedly, it's not really worth driving all the way to Tennessee for its wreathed hearth, when there are thousands of places across the country that will be decking their halls too.

The hotel is next to the Incredible Christmas Place, which has been selling Christmas-themed everything for 20 years.

There are a few dedicated year-round Santa's villages. They are all modest affairs; like Santa Land near Tyler, Texas, Santa's Land, in Putney, Vermont, or Santa's Village in Jefferson New Hampshire, and Canada has its Village du Pere Noel near Montreal.

You might want to turn the volume on your computer down before looking at the above websites, as they'll blast you with synthesised carols.
