I am due to fly to the USA in mid-March, when my daughter will be 10 weeks old. I feed her with formula milk, but can I take this on the plane? Is there a relaxation of the rules about carrying liquids for travel with infants? Tracey Washer, Derby

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Yes, if you are travelling with your baby, you can carry baby formula (or baby food), in quantities of more than 100ml. However, when leaving the UK, be prepared to taste anything that you are carrying through at security.

This is a bother, especially if you are use the formula cartons, which you'll then have to juggle through the airport opened. Security will let formula powder through too ­ though again you may have to taste it, and you should check with your airline if they will help make it p for you in flight, as many won't.

The easiest option is to buy your formula at a chemist once you are through into the departure lounge. Boots has branches in the airside shopping areas of all the BAA airports, plus many others too, and do stock formula. Check with the airport website, or call up the information desk, which for a BAA airport is 0845 070 8090, or www.baa.com, to get the telephone number of the chemist. Often you will be able to pre order before you travel.

For the flight home, it's a similar situation. You can carry more than the US permitted 3oz through security, but you won't be asked to taste it.

It's a good idea to check if there is a pharmacy in the departure lounge when you arrive in the US. Ask at the information desk, get the number, and it might also be possible to pre-order. In both directions, only take as much formula, breast milk, or juice (which are all treated the same by security) in your carry-on luggage, as you need for the journey.
