I want to visit Swansea and the Dylan Thomas Centre. Can you tell me where else I should visit in the area connected with his life? Hermione Hardcastle, Kings Lynn
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Start at The Dylan Thomas Centre (Somerset Place, 01792 463980; free entry), where you'll find lively displays of his life and works, plus a recreation of his writing shed and a bust cast from his death mask.
From the centre, it's a 30-minute walk through the "ugly, lovely town", as Thomas called Swansea, to the Uplands, the suburb where he was born. There are great views over Swansea Bay from the memorial to him in the little park, and it's a short stroll from there past the house where he grew up - 5 Cwmdonkin Drive.
Just fives miles around the Bay is The Mumbles, a little seaside jumble of a town with lots of pubs, where Thomas famously drank away many an afternoon.
Head west from here and you are in the beautiful Gower Peninsula, which culminates in the magnificent Rhossili Bay. Thomas came here as a boy and scrambled over the cliffs, and onto the rocky outcrop of Worms Head.
The most intimate location on the Thomas trail though is Laugharne, an eccentric little town that inspired him to write "Under Milk Wood". He and his wife Caitlin lived in a pretty cottage here from 1949, until his death in 1953. Called The Boathouse (01267 228236, entry £3.50), it's now a delightful museum dedicated to Thomas, sitting on the banks of the River Taf.
You can peer into his real writing shed just up the road, and I'd strongly recommend stopping for a pint, as Thomas did on a daily basis, at Browns Hotel. It's a short walk from there to his final resting place, next to Caitlin in the grounds of St Martin's Church.
