I am hoping to go to Dominican Republic in June with my two sons aged nine and 13. Do you know if June would be a rainy season in this part of the world? We are going for two weeks and I do not want to be plagued by unprediticable weather. Emma Fitzpatrick, Dublin
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green writes: I'd say you are right to plumb for the Dominican Republic in June. It's a year round holiday destination with average temperatures a beautiful and balmy 26 degrees centigrade.
Of course, these days it is impossible to avoid the climate's growing unpredictability, but if past records are anything to go by, June is a good time to visit.
It'll just be getting busy, as the two tourist high seasons are in July and August and from December to mid February.
On average, it gets about 50% more rainfall per year than London, but don't worry too much about that, as it tends to fall in short sharp tropical downpours. The northern beaches actually have their driest month in June, whereas the east is a little wetter.
The so called "cool" season runs from November to April, during time the notoriously high humidity is somewhat lower. It also cools down in the evenings more.
The Dominican Republic is in hurricane territory though, but while the season officially runs from the beginning of June to the end of November, most hurricanes, like 1998's Hurricane George, which lashed the country in September, have struck the country in August and September.
