I’ve read a few travel articles recently about Brooklyn being an upcoming part of New York. For something different, we would like to base ourselves there for a few days on our next trip to the US. Do you know of a B&B style options, or some not too expensive hotels that I might look at? Mary Kitson, Bristol

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Brooklyn hotels are usually pretty expensive, the swanky new Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge (333 Adams Street, 001 718 246 7000) has doubles starting from £276, or the new Hotel Le Bleu (370 Fourth Ave, 001 718 625 1500) has rooms from £221.

However, a good value and beautifully decorated B&B option is the Akwaaba Mansion (347 MacDonough Street, 001 718 455 5958), which occupies a lovely old 1860’s townhouse and has a nice secluded garden too. The public spaces are richly decorated, and there’s an interesting African theme to the bedroom decor – Akwaaba means "welcome" in Ghanaian. Doubles are from £82.

Extremely opulently decorated and set in a turn of the century brownstone house, is the Bed & Breakfast on the Park (113 Prospect Park West; 001 718 499 6115), which has seven grand individually styled rooms from £130.

A smaller and simpler B&B, also in a brownstone house, is 388 Bergen House (001 718 783 0080) which has just four quite plain rooms, from £83 a night, without breakfast. Or there’s the homely House on 3rd St. (718-788-7171), which has artistically cluttered doubles from £87, not including breakfast.
