I am trying to plan a trip to Austria for early winter. I'd like to visit Vienna and Salzburg, so can you tell me the best way of getting between the two cities, and also how much it costs? Jason Pringle, Didcot

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: The best, most relaxing option, is to take the train. Austrian Railways operates an efficient network with smart carriages and frequent services, especially between the main cities. The quickest trains from Vienna to Salzburg take 2 hours 39 minutes and the fare is £35 one-way in second class.

If you are looking to fly into or out of Salzburg and save on having to do a roundtrip from Vienna, you should also look at flights into or out of Munich. There are more airlines flying there, and from more UK airports, and it is often possible to find cheaper options to here than it is to Salzburg.

Munich airport has its own train station, from where you can get to Salzburg in 2hours 20 minutes, with a change in the main train station in Munich. It costs £23 each way and is bookable through Deutsche Bahn (08718 808066). You can also book train journeys in Austria through here.
