We lived in Aden during in the early 60s and then returned to the UK by boat, using the British India Line, up the Red Sea and through the Suez Canal. Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: There aren't a lot of cruise ships that call into Aden these days, but if you are prepared to compromise a little on your start and end ports, you'll be able to find a terrific cruise that calls into the Indian Ocean port of Aden, and also into Yemeni's Red Sea port of Hodeidah too.

Costa Cruises (020 7940 5398) operates several cruises a year that call at Aden. The next available is a 21-night cruise from Savona in Italy, with port calls including Alexandria, Port Said, Aqaba, Sharm El Shiek, Aden, Hodeidah, Salalah, Muscat, Dubai, and finishing in Bahrain. Prices start at about £1,700pp, with flights to and from Newcastle.

There is a 21-night cruise in April coming back from Dubai to Venice, but it is sold out, but this will possibly run again in April 2010. Costa run excursions a four-hour city tour of Aden is £45pp, and there is chance to visit Sanaa from the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

Voyages of Discovery (01444 462 150) also have cruises that call at Aden. Its India and the Persian Gulf cruise departs Mumbai on March 27 2009, and then calls at Porbandar, Muscat, Salalah, Aden, Hodeidah, Aqaba, and finishes at Safaga on Egypt's Red Sea Coast. Prices start from £2,295pp.
