We were recently booked to fly with easyJet from Rome. After several hours’ delay, staff announced that passengers would be put up overnight at hotels. It was made clear that the flight had not been cancelled but rescheduled, and I was given several different reasons for this.

If the flight had been cancelled, I would have been entitled to €125 in compensation under European Union rules, and easyJet would have had to cover my additional hotel and travel expenses. When we returned, I asked again for an explanation and was told it was for “technical reasons”. What is the point of the EU protection if airlines can flout the rules when it suits them? EasyJet replies: “This flight wasn’t cancelled, it was rescheduled to the following day due to a technical issue. We do not disclose specific details of technical issues. In line with EU passenger compensation rules, passengers were given refreshment vouchers, hotel accommodation and transport to and from the airport.”
