Question: I am an American living in the US. We are getting ready to take our 8-month-old baby to Ireland. Do you know of any good websites for travel tips? I am interested to see how "baby-friendly" restaurants are etc. We will be in Dublin one day/night and renting a house the rest of the time. Katy Dailey, US
Answer: Travelling abroad with young children can prove a challenging endeavour but a number of websites are there to help. Last year Times Online compiled a helpful list of the best baby travel websites - this is certainly worth revisiting.
Still number one in its field is Mumsnet, which dispenses sound advice on everything from baby slings to travel cots and also carries a good range of holiday and accommodation reviews. The site also plays host to a vast community message board, where you can post queries and invite other users to respond.
Beyond the aforementioned list, About.com devotes a sizeable section to family travel that contains useful tips on avoiding tantrums throughout journeys and even specific advice on planning plane trips with babies. The eleven-year heritage of this site makes it a particularly trustworthy resource.
BabyCentre also contains an excellent range of articles concerning travelling with youngsters, while AskBaby and Flying with Kids are also worth a look. As is the Times Online's compilation article, Top 10 questions about flying with kids.
Most airlines have set up their own web pages to advise passengers intending to travel with children. American Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic all offer travellers guidance on issues ranging from food arrangements to seating restrictions. Policies and arrangements differ so it would be prudent to check.
In terms of deciding how best to spend your time in Ireland, Tourism Ireland’s website presents a variety of accommodation options and also offers ideas on things to do and places to go with your child.
Another particularly good resource is DoChara, which lists a wealth of family-friendly activities and accommodation throughout the country.
Finally, dublin.ie provides an exhaustive list of family-friendly restaurants within Dublin and MyTravel samples over 200 more eateries across the rest of Ireland.
