Is it possible to deliver cars in Australia as it is in the USA? I like the idea of driving from one side of the country to the other. Mike Wyatt, London
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Sure is, and the principles are the same too – basically you get a terrific bargain drive whilst delivering a car or campervan from one specified location to another. They are called relocations, and the gist is that you are driving the vehicle back to where the hire company next needs it.
Prices start from a just a token $1 Australian a day, and sometimes you get a fuel allowance for longer journeys too – usually payable on delivery of you keep your petrol receipts. You can do this in New Zealand as well, and if you use the ferry between the North and South Islands, this is also usually refunded.
It’s a great way to see some of the countryside for little outlay, and if you have a campervan you can take as many mates with you are there are official berths.
Standby Cars has a six-berth camper van this week from Darwin to Brisbane, with a $500 (£220) fuel allowance, a cost to you for the drive of $5 (£2.20) per day, and you are allowed to rack up 3,650 kilometers on the way.
Note though, that you can only book up to one month in advance, that you can’t go off-roading (even if you do happen to score a 4WD to deliver), and while there is some slack in time and mileage, you can’t see somewhere nice and park up for a few days, or embark on long detours. However, there is some leeway, and if you bust the limit, you pay 50 cents per extra kilometer.
In general, you are expected to cover about 400 km (about 250 miles) per day, and the mileage you are allowed free over and above the direct route on your journey, is about 100-600km (60-350 miles), so you don’t have to literally make a beeline.
