My boyfriend and I are going to New York and would like to know where we can go to ice skate? I mean the romantic ice rink in a park type experience, rather than anything indoors. Jennifer Broome, Huddersfield

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: It doesn't get much more romantic than doing the rounds at the Wollman Rink in Central Park. Its where Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neil went skating in the 1970 film, Love Story, and even if you haven't seen the film, you'll probably have the soaring music in your head as your both spin round.

The rink has featured in dozens of films since then and is a favourite of visitors and New Yorkers. It's open from mid November to March, but check ahead, as it is used for events and filming. Various opening times, but roughly from 10am till as late as 11pm, and it costs £10pp, including skate hire.

The Rockefeller Center Ice Rink is a classic venue too: small and intimate, right by the gigantic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. It can get crowded, so might be best to head here early in the day. A skate is £13pp.

The Polar Rink at the American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West and 79th Street) is new this year. I'm not sure what the Love story leads would have made of the "recyclable synthetic surface" ­ apparently ice that doesn't melt on warmer days - but it's in a great location, with views of the Rose Center for Earth and Space, and the surrounding Theodore Roosevelt Park.

It's on a terrace outside the north side of the museum and open until February 28. And there's a 17-foot-tall polar bear in the rink's middle, covered in twinkling white lights. Skating costs £7pp.
