Q It was good to read your recent safari article but can you give me some more advice to find a safari holiday to suit my family’s needs?

We are two adults and two children, aged 8 and 10, and need to travel in the school holidays. I recall a colleague talking about holidaying in South Africa and travelling to the coast to see penguins as well as going on safari. Is this feasible?

A The Africa specialist Rainbow Tours (020-7226 1004, rainbowtours.co.uk) says that South Africa is the place to see penguins. There are large colonies at Boulders Beach on the Cape Peninsula and on Robben Island.

You can stay at Boulders Beach Lodge, which has a two-bedroom family suite and caters for vegetarians. There is a lovely beach and safe bathing as well.

From Cape Town you could fly to Port Elizabeth, a short drive from Woodbury Lodge on the malaria-free Amakhala Wildlife Reserve in the Eastern Cape.

This is a reasonably priced lodge, and you would see many species in the wild, including elephant, lion, cheetah, rhino, giraffe and wildebeest.

For two adults and two children under 12 in February half term, prices start at £5,625. This includes flights from the UK to Cape Town and out from Johannesburg, internal flights from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and on to Johannesburg, three nights’ B&B in a family suite at Boulders Beach Lodge, three nights in two rooms at Woodbury Lodge, all meals, transfers, game viewing and a hire car in Cape Town.
